⚡ The short version for Chicago Murano owners
Z52 (2015–2024, V6 + CVT): Oil every 3,500–5,000 miles (0W-20 synthetic). CVT fluid at 30,000 miles — the earliest severe interval of any Nissan — using NS-3 only. AWD: transfer case and rear diff at 30K. Z53 (2025+, VC-Turbo + 9-speed): Oil every 3,500–5,000 miles (0W-20 synthetic, turbo-rated). 9-speed automatic fluid at 60K severe — not NS-3, and not a CVT. AWD driveline on the same schedule. Timing chain on both. Brake fluid every 2 years. Spring undercarriage wash, every year. If you own a pre-2025 Murano, CVT fluid is the single most important decision you’ll make.

The Murano occupies a unique spot — more premium than a Rogue, two rows instead of three like the Pathfinder. And through 2024, it ran the most heavily-stressed CVT in the Nissan lineup.

Murano Service Roadmap: 5K to 100K+

Both normal and Chicago/severe intervals. CVT milestones (Z52) and automatic-transmission milestones (Z53) highlighted separately — they are different fluids and different intervals. AWD services noted where they differ from FWD.

Miles Normal Chicago Severe Services
5,000 6 mo 4–5 mo Engine oil & filter (0W-20 synthetic), tire rotation, brake & light check, fluid top-off
10,000 12 mo 8–10 mo Oil & filter, rotation, multipoint inspection, battery terminal check, tire pressure & tread
15,000 18 mo 12–15 mo Cabin air filter replacement, engine air filter inspection, full brake measurement, tire balance
20,000 24 mo 18–20 mo Oil, rotation, brake fluid inspection, steering & suspension check, alignment (post-pothole season)
30,000 36 mo 24–30 mo Z52 CVT fluid replacement — severe (NS-3 only). AWD: transfer case & rear diff. Engine air filter, brake fluid, exhaust, alignment. Z53: CVT fluid is NOT applicable
45,000 36–42 mo Oil, rotation, spark plug inspection, belt & hose check, cabin air filter. Z52: CVT fluid condition check
60,000 72 mo 48–54 mo Z52: CVT fluid (2nd severe change). AWD: transfer case & diff (2nd change). Z53: automatic transmission fluid service. Spark plugs (both), coolant inspection
75,000 Oil, rotation, full brake service, belt & hose inspection, cabin filter, battery load test
90,000 Z52: CVT fluid (3rd severe change). AWD: transfer case & diff. Spark plugs, coolant flush, timing chain inspection
100,000+ Struts & shocks, bushings, wheel bearings, AC system, CVT or 9-speed re-check, all rubber components, full suspension rebuild evaluation

Oil: 0W-20 full synthetic, all model years — but the Z53 VC-Turbo is less forgiving of stretched intervals. Z52 transmission: Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid only. Z53 transmission: 9-speed automatic — not CVT, uses Nissan Matic W or equivalent (confirm spec at service time). AWD models add transfer case and rear differential fluid on the 30K severe interval. Cross-reference your owner’s manual.

Heaviest CVT in the Lineup — Until 2025

The Z52 Murano runs the most heavily-stressed CVT in Nissan’s current U.S. lineup. ~3,900 lb curb weight, a 260 hp V6 with real torque, and available AWD on top of it. More weight and more torque than a Rogue; more stress than a Pathfinder (which moved to a 9-speed automatic in 2022). For 2025, Nissan ended the CVT era on the Murano entirely — the Z53 uses a 2.0L VC-Turbo and a conventional 9-speed automatic. Two very different ownership stories.

HIGH
Z52 CVT Stress

Heaviest CVT application in the current Nissan lineup. V6 torque + vehicle weight + AWD option = the most demanding severe interval.

NS-3
Z52 Required Fluid

Nissan NS-3 only. Generic ATF = wrong friction modifiers. On a V6 CVT application, this is non-negotiable.

30K mi
Z52 Severe Interval

Earliest CVT service interval in the lineup. 5K earlier than a Rogue, 15K earlier than a Kicks.

$5,000–6,500
Z52 Replacement Cost

Larger V6 CVT unit, more labor. A ~$250 fluid change every few years prevents a $5K+ bill.

Why the Z52 Murano’s CVT needs so much attention

The CVT in the Z52 Murano is a variant of Nissan’s JATCO JF017E — a heavier-duty unit than what goes into a Rogue. It has to, because the Murano’s 3.5L VQ35DE puts out noticeably more torque than the Rogue’s 2.5L, and the vehicle is heavier on top of that. That combination means the CVT belt, pulleys, and fluid all work harder per mile. Add Chicago stop-and-go, 30 days a year above 90°F, 30 days a year below 20°F, and AWD engagement on slippery roads — and you have a CVT that degrades fluid fast. That’s why the severe interval drops to 30K miles — the earliest in the Nissan lineup.

AWD Muranos: don’t forget the transfer case

AWD Muranos have a transfer case and rear differential that also need fluid service — every 30K miles under severe conditions. Schedule these with your CVT service to keep everything on one timeline. Budget roughly $200–$270 for the pair alongside your CVT fluid service. Skipping this doesn’t destroy the CVT, but it creates driveline whine, vibration, and eventual coupling wear that runs into four figures.

The Z53 reset: a completely different story

The 2025 Murano is a fundamentally new vehicle. The V6 is gone, replaced by Nissan’s 2.0L VC-Turbo (variable-compression turbo) four-cylinder. The CVT is gone, replaced by a conventional 9-speed automatic. Everything about transmission service changes: no more NS-3, no more 30K severe interval, no more CVT belt-wear concerns. The 9-speed uses Nissan Matic W or equivalent fluid on a 60K severe interval. Owners crossing over from the Z52 need to understand this isn’t just a new model year — it’s a different drivetrain category. Your old service habits don’t carry over 1:1.

What to watch for

Z52: hesitation from a stop, shuddering under gentle acceleration, a “rubber-band” feel on highway merges, or whine from the transmission area. Early intervention is hundreds; late intervention is thousands. Z53: harsh or delayed shifts, especially cold-morning 1–2 upshift. Any of these is a reason to check fluid condition and schedule service, regardless of mileage.
Reminder: If anyone says Murano CVT fluid is “lifetime” — that is not Nissan’s position. Owner’s manual for Z52: 60K mi or 72 months normal, sooner under severe. NS-3 only. Chicago qualifies as severe. And if anyone tries to put NS-3 in a 2025+ Murano, find another shop — it’s a 9-speed automatic, not a CVT.

Nissan Murano: What to Watch For

The Z52 had a long 10-year production run with a well-documented issue profile — mostly CVT-related, mostly preventable with maintenance. The Z53 is brand-new and its long-term story is still forming; early signs are good, but the VC-Turbo introduces concerns the V6 didn’t have.

High
CVT shudder / hesitation / failure
2015–2018 · Z52 early production

The Murano’s CVT was one of the most-complained-about in the Nissan lineup in early Z52 years. Shuddering, hesitation, and premature failure between 70K–100K miles. Higher torque and weight than the Rogue made it worse. 2019+ models improved with better cooling and software. Documented NS-3 fluid changes are the #1 preventive factor. Nissan extended CVT warranty on some early Muranos to 10 yr / 120K — check your VIN.

Medium
Transmission cooler line corrosion
2015–2024 · Salt states

Road salt corrodes transmission cooler lines. A leak starves the CVT and ends it fast. Inspect annually in Chicago — particularly on Z52 Muranos approaching or past 80K miles. Preventive line replacement is hundreds; a new CVT is thousands.

Medium
Emergency braking false activation
2017–2022 · ProPILOT-equipped trims

Automatic emergency braking engaging without an obstacle — phantom braking. Most common at 40K–70K miles. Nissan issued software updates that partially addressed it. Sensor recalibration after windshield replacement is critical.

Medium
VQ35DE oil consumption
2015–2024 · Z52 · high-mileage

Some higher-mileage Z52 Muranos consume oil between changes. Monitor the dipstick between services, especially past 80K miles. Not universal, but common enough to watch. Don’t stretch oil intervals on a VQ35 that’s showing consumption.

Medium
Panoramic sunroof leaks
2015–2024 · Z52

Sunroof drains can clog with debris, causing water to find its way into the headliner or rear passenger area. Quick fix: clear the drains at every spring service. Ignored, it leads to headliner stains and electronics corrosion.

Medium
Battery drain in cold weather
All years · Chicago-specific

Factory battery typically fades by Chicago Winter 3 or 4. The Murano’s electronics package draws more parasitic load than lighter models. Load-test annually starting Year 3. Replacement $180–$260.

Low
Early Z53 VC-Turbo considerations
2025+ · Z53

The VC-Turbo is a complex variable-compression design and runs hotter than the old V6. No widespread reliability issues have surfaced yet, but do not stretch oil intervals, and allow a brief idle cooldown after hard driving. Early signs are good — it’s a proven engine from other Nissan/Infiniti applications.

Two Very Different Muranos, One Team That Knows Both

The Z52 and Z53 Muranos are essentially different vehicles under one nameplate — different engines, different transmissions, different service fluids, different failure modes. A factory-trained Nissan dealership works on both every week, keeps both sets of fluids on hand, and never confuses NS-3 with Matic W. Independent shops can service the mechanical basics, but the generation-specific details are where dealership experience pays off.

Z52 vs. Z53: The Biggest Reset in the Lineup

No current Nissan crossed a bigger line between generations than the Murano. For ten years it was a V6 with a CVT; for 2025 it became a turbo four with a conventional automatic. The vehicle is still recognizable — the styling evolved, the size is similar — but the ownership experience under the hood is almost a different car.

2015–2024

Z52 (Third Generation)

  • 3.5L VQ35DE V6 — 260 hp / 240 lb-ft. Smooth, torquey, characterful — but thirsty
  • Xtronic CVT — the highest-stress CVT application in the lineup
  • Oil: 0W-20 synthetic (5W-30 acceptable on some earlier years — check manual)
  • CVT fluid: Nissan NS-3 only, severe interval 30K miles
  • Refreshed for 2019 with updated styling, improved infotainment, and better CVT cooling
  • 2015–2018 models had the highest CVT complaint rates — verify fluid history before buying used
  • Panoramic sunroof (available) adds complexity — drains need annual cleaning
  • Used buyers: demand CVT fluid records. No documented NS-3 change past 40K = walk away or negotiate hard
2025–Present

Z53 (Fourth Generation)

  • 2.0L VC-Turbo 4-cylinder — 241 hp / 260 lb-ft. More torque than the V6, better fuel economy
  • 9-speed conventional automatic — no more CVT, no more NS-3
  • Oil: 0W-20 synthetic, turbo-rated — don’t stretch intervals
  • Transmission fluid: Nissan Matic W or equivalent spec, 60K severe interval
  • Safety Shield 360 and ProPILOT Assist available — camera recal after windshield work ($150–$250)
  • Substantially more premium interior, better sound insulation, more tech
  • VC-Turbo runs hotter than V6 — idle cooldown after hard driving, don’t shut off immediately
  • Too new for long-term reliability data — but the VC-Turbo is proven in other Nissan/Infiniti applications
Bottom line: The Z53 is a better-mannered, more efficient, more modern vehicle — and it eliminates the Murano’s biggest long-term service risk (CVT wear). But it also trades a simple, proven V6 for a complex turbo-four that demands discipline on oil changes and heat management. The Z52 is charismatic and cheaper to buy used, but CVT history makes or breaks the deal. For a new Murano buyer, the Z53 is the safer long-term bet. For a used shopper, a 2019+ Z52 with full service records is often a better value.

Low-Mileage Owners: Minimum Schedule

Under 7,500 mi/year? Calendar triggers still apply. Fluids degrade on time, not just mileage — and the Z52 CVT is particularly unforgiving of calendar-based neglect.

Every 6 mo
Oil & Filter

Even below 5K miles. Z53 VC-Turbo: treat this as a hard rule. Moisture and oxidation happen on a calendar.

Annually
Multipoint Inspection

Brakes, tread, fluids, battery, lights, TPMS. AWD: driveline check. Z52: sunroof drain check.

Every 2 yr
Brake Fluid

Absorbs moisture over time. Chicago humidity accelerates this. Heavier crossover = more brake demand.

Every 3 yr
Coolant Check

Loses corrosion inhibitors. Degraded coolant is a real risk in Chicago temperature extremes.

72 months
Trans Fluid (by time)

Z52: CVT fluid max. 5-year-old Murano with 25K miles? Still needs changing. NS-3 only. Z53: Matic W on same 72-mo ceiling.

Every spring
Undercarriage Wash

One salt season = enough to start corrosion. Z52 transmission cooler lines are especially vulnerable.

Battery $180–$260 3–5 yr Higher parasitic draw on either generation. Load-test from Year 3
Coolant flush $150–$220 90K mi / 5 yr Nissan-spec coolant only
Alignment $100–$150 Annually Every pothole season
Wiper blades (genuine) $59.95 Annually OON published price. Genuine Nissan exact-fit
Z52 CVT replacement $5,000–$6,500 Cost of skipping fluid. Larger unit than Rogue
Annual budget: Z52: ~$600–$850/year (FWD) or $700–$1,000/year (AWD) at 12K mi/year on severe schedule. CVT fluid at 30K (~$260) is the critical recurring item. Z53: ~$500–$700/year (FWD) or $600–$850/year (AWD) — less frequent trans service offsets the higher per-service cost. Both generations: major milestones add $300–$700 each when they come due.

Why Documentation Protects You

Records directly affect warranty claims, goodwill repairs, and resale value. This matters enormously for the Z52 Murano — CVT history is the first thing a used-market buyer or trade-in appraiser asks about. For Z53 owners, turbo engine records will become just as important over time.

Nissan New Vehicle Warranty

  • 3 yr / 36K — bumper-to-bumper
  • 5 yr / 60K — powertrain (engine + trans + AWD)
  • 5 yr / unlimited — corrosion

CVT (Z52), 9-speed automatic (Z53), and AWD system covered under powertrain — if maintenance follows Nissan guidelines. Some early Z52 models received extended CVT warranty coverage.

Goodwill Repairs

Z52 CVT fails at 75K? Nissan sometimes authorizes partial coverage — especially on Muranos, given the model’s CVT history. Documented NS-3 fluid changes are the #1 factor. A receipt showing NS-3 at 30K, 60K, 90K has real dollar value.

Resale & Trade-In

The Z52’s CVT reputation means buyers scrutinize service history harder than almost any other Nissan. Complete dealer records — especially CVT and AWD fluid changes — add measurable trade-in value. Unknown CVT history = significant discount, sometimes $2,000+ on a well-equipped example.

What to Keep

  • Every oil receipt
  • Z52: CVT fluid receipt with spec noted (NS-3)
  • Z53: trans fluid receipt with spec noted (Matic W)
  • Transfer case & diff fluid receipts (AWD)
  • Brake records
  • TSB / recall work
  • Any CVT warranty extension paperwork (Z52)

The spec on the receipt matters as much as the service itself. NS-3 or Matic W on paper = protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Murano have a CVT?
Z52 (2015–2024): yes — Xtronic CVT, uses Nissan NS-3 fluid. Z53 (2025+): no — conventional 9-speed automatic, uses Nissan Matic W or equivalent. These are fundamentally different transmissions and require different service.
How often should I change the oil in Chicago?
Every 3,500–5,000 miles or 4–5 months. Chicago = severe conditions. Use 0W-20 full synthetic on both generations. The Z53 VC-Turbo is especially unforgiving of stretched intervals — keep this one tight.
When does Z52 CVT fluid need changing?
Chicago severe: ~30,000 miles — the earliest CVT interval in the Nissan lineup. Normal: 60K or 72 months. Nissan NS-3 only. The Murano’s weight and V6 torque make this one of the most stressed CVT applications Nissan sells — skipping fluid service is the fastest way to a $5,000 problem.
What about the 2025+ Z53 transmission?
The Z53 uses a conventional 9-speed automatic — not a CVT. Service fluid is Nissan Matic W or equivalent spec, not NS-3. Chicago severe interval: ~60,000 miles. Under no circumstances should any shop put NS-3 in a Z53.
Does my AWD Murano need transfer case service?
Yes. AWD models need transfer case and rear differential fluid changed every 30,000 miles under severe conditions — schedule them alongside your transmission service to keep everything on one timeline. Budget ~$200–$300 for the pair.
Timing belt or chain?
Timing chain — all years, both generations. No scheduled replacement. Inspect at 90K for stretch or noise.
Should I buy a Z52 or Z53?
For a new Murano, the Z53 is the safer long-term bet — no CVT wear concerns, more modern platform, better efficiency. For a used Murano, a 2019–2024 Z52 with complete service history is often the better value. Avoid 2015–2018 models with unknown CVT fluid history. Ask for NS-3 service receipts before making an offer.
FWD or AWD for Chicago?
AWD provides measurable benefit in Chicago winters — better traction on snow and slush. The trade-off: higher purchase price, more maintenance (transfer case, diff fluid), and slightly worse fuel economy. Good winter tires on FWD outperform all-seasons on AWD — but AWD + winter tires is the best combination for serious Chicago winters.
Annual maintenance cost?
Z52: ~$600–$850/year (FWD) or $700–$1,000/year (AWD) at 12K mi/year on severe schedule. Z53: ~$500–$700/year (FWD) or $600–$850/year (AWD). Major milestones add $300–$700 each. The Z52’s 30K CVT interval makes it slightly more expensive to maintain than the Z53 over a decade of ownership.
Can I use an independent shop?
Yes for most services. For Z52 CVT: confirm Nissan NS-3. For Z53 trans: confirm Matic W or equivalent spec. For transfer case and differentials: confirm Nissan-spec fluid. “Universal ATF works” or “generic CVT fluid works” = find another shop. ProPILOT recalibration, TSB updates, and Z53 software updates are dealer-only.
