Quality and Efficient Oil Changes at Old Orchard Nissan

Ever since the days of the Model T, oil changes at regular intervals has been the single best way to ensure engine longevity. It’s a question of “spend a little now or spend a lot later,” as regular oil changes can mean heading off expensive engine repairs by cutting friction, sludge buildup and premature wear.

If you’re not sure when your last oil change was or if you need an oil change, we answer a few common questions below. Don’t hesitate to call us if you have any other questions.

Oil Change FAQ

The internal combustion engine has many moving parts that operate at extremely tight tolerances with each other. The friction from these parts, along with the combustion process, generates a tremendous amount of heat and motor oil serves as a lubricant to help dissipate that heat and cut wear. Without oil, your engine would quickly overheat to a point where parts would literally weld to each other and seize the engine. Oil has to be changed regularly because it picks up contaminants like metal particles, carbon, water vapor and acids that break down the oil’s lubricating properties. Lower-quality oil is notably less effective than factory-recommended oil.

Depending on the vehicle and the oil itself, oil changes should be scheduled every 3,000 to 10,000 miles. If you’re not sure how long it’s been, look for these warning signs:

  • Oil that’s the color of black coffee
  • Oil has an acrid, acidic odor
  • Engine is noisier than usual
  • Check Engine light is on

If you notice any of these, it’s time to consult with a technician.

During an oil change, the first step will be to check the oil level and condition of the oil that’s in your engine already. From there, the old oil will be completely drained. Then, the old oil filter will be replaced and the new oil added. Replacing the filter is necessary because the old filter is saturated with contaminants from the old oil; reusing the filter would immediately foul the new oil.

There are a few simple steps involved in checking your own oil:

  • Let the car cool for at least ten minutes, then pull the hood release and raise the hood
  • Locate the oil dipstick
  • Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean on a lint-free cloth or paper towel
  • Reinsert the dipstick into the dipstick tube
  • Pull the dipstick again and check the oil level

The dipstick itself will have the proper oil level or “add 1 quart” printed on it. After reinserting and pulling the dipstick a second time, you’ll have an accurate idea of the oil level and condition of your oil. If the oil level is low or if the oil appears silty and dark (fresh motor oil should be honey-colored), it’s time to set up an oil change.
